Acceptance and Improvement

Often times we reach a stage in our life when we are unable to figure out what the heck is going on with our life. There seem to be chaos everywhere. Our finances are not good. Our relationships might be going for a toss. We might start to experience health issues. How to regain your footing when nothing seem to be working? How to feel good when everything seem to be out of your control?

The answer to above question is “Acceptance and Improvement”. Yes, these two simple world can bring about miracles in your life if used properly. The truth about life is that conditions are never going to be perfect. No one in your life will always behave the way you want them to behave. There always be something which will not be as per your liking. You will face disappointments while dealing with people. You will face disappointments in your finances.

When you come across unwanted situations there are two things you can do. You can either chose to get depressed and say “Why me?” or you can accept that these unwanted circumstances are part and parcel of life and that there is no way to escape them. While the first attitude will bring about frustration and stress, the second attitude will bring about a sense of calmness and peace.

Let us take example of two mountaineers. The first mountaineer doesn’t have any knowledge of climbing and thinks that the journey towards the peak will be easy and comfortable. The second mountaineer on the other hand has done his homework and is fully aware that the journey will have both good and difficult moments. He is mentally prepared for the challenges and is also excited about the ecstatic moments of climbing a mountain. They both start the journey towards the peak. Who do you think is likely to give up and get disappointed when the climb starts to become difficult? Obviously, the first mountaineer. He is not mentally prepared for the challenges to come. On the other hand when the second mountaineer faces challenges it doesn’t stop him from moving forward. The reason being he has already accepted the fact the climb towards the peak is not going to be easy. So he is much better equipped mentally to handle the pressure.

Same is the case with life. When it comes to life things will not always be perfect. Accepting this fact equips you better to handle the challenges and difficulties of life. Acceptance does not mean stop taking actions. There is another part to it which is “Improvement”. When things are not going well, you can always chart out ways to improve your situation. You can take actions in the direction of your goals. Striving to improve is easy if you understand the first part i.e. “Acceptance”. When you accept the given situation as it is you are calm and relaxed. With this state of mind you are able to think clearly and take correct actions. If you do not accept the situation as it is you go into panic mode. Instead of taking correct actions you take self-sabotaging actions.

“Silence is an empty space, space is the home of the awakened mind.” – Buddha

If you accept a situation as it is instead of fighting it, then you can achieve silence and peace of mind. From that mindset you can think of improving your situation. Let me know you opinions and comments on this in the comment section below.
